Once, a learned priest was traveling on a sea voyage. One night, a fierce storm struck, forcing the ship to anchor near a small island. By morning, it was discovered that the storm had damaged the vessel, and repairs would take a couple of days.
The priest thought to himself, “Why not take a small boat to the island, explore it, and if I meet anyone there, share the message of God and guide them on the path to the Divine?”
With the captain’s permission, he rowed to the island. While wandering through its quiet landscape, he came across three islanders who had been living there for many years. The priest greeted them warmly and began a conversation.
Curious, he asked, “Do you believe in God?”
They all replied together, “Yes, we do.”
The priest then asked, “And how do you worship Him?”
One of them explained, “We simply lift both our hands to the sky and say, ‘O Lord, we are Yours, we remember You, please remember us too.’”
The priest frowned slightly and said, “That is not the correct way to pray.”
The islanders humbly asked, “Then please teach us the right prayer.”
The priest gladly spent time teaching them how to read from holy scriptures and recite formal prayers. When the ship’s repairs were complete, he returned to continue his journey.
Three days later, as he was walking on the ship’s deck, the priest saw something astonishing—the three islanders were running across the water, following the ship! Shocked, he asked the captain to stop the vessel and helped them aboard.
Puzzled, he asked, “Why have you come this way?”
One of them answered, “The prayer you taught us—we forgot it the very next day. So we came to you again to learn it once more. Please help us.”
Still in awe, the priest asked, “But how did you manage to run on water?”
The islander smiled and said, “We wanted to reach you quickly, so we prayed, ‘O Lord! We will run—just don’t let us fall.’ And so, we ran.”
The priest stood silent for a moment, humbled. Finally, he said, “Your faith in God is truly blessed. You do not need any other prayer. Continue praying as you did before—‘O Lord! We will run, just don’t let us fall.’”
